New feature - Burstable Virtual PRI / Elastic SIP Trunking

VoIP.ms is now introducing Burstable Virtual PRI also known as Elastic SIP Trunking for greater flexibility!

For a while now, VoIP.ms has offered the possibility to have a Virtual PRI (VPRI) for unlimited inbound calls (non-metered) with as many concurrent calls (channels) as your business needs. Depending on your business needs, you may allow all your DIDs to share a pool of channels directly in your VPRI and the number of channels can be adjusted according to your needs. We also offer this service for several countries around the world.

The new burstable feature allows you to use more channels than your actual limit ensuring you to receive every call. We also implemented a hard limit that you may choose according to your needs.

To ease your understanding of this new feature, here is a quick example:

Say that you originally had a 50 channels VPRI with VoIP.ms, if at some point you received more than 50 calls at the same time, the caller would get a busy signal. To avoid this situation, with the addition of this new feature, you could decide to allow your VPRI to burst until 100 calls, and you would simply get charged a small premium for the additional channels used over your original limit.

Unlike most Burstable Virtual PRI product offering in the industry, we kept in mind our pay-as-you-go and hassle-free approach. Therefore, we charge on a pay-per-use model where if you use 10 extra channels only for 1 day in a given month, we won’t charge you the channels for the entire month, but rather only for this specific busy day.

As always, this feature is available to all our customers without any contract. For more information, you can read our Wiki article here.

Curious about getting a Burstable VPRI? Simply contact our team at sales@voip.ms and we will answer all your questions.

You already use our service and you want to switch to a Burstable VPRI? The transition is seamless. There is no downtime and no reconfiguration is required on your side.

Thanks for being a VoIP.ms customer and we hope you will enjoy our new feature.

We are improving our server architecture

Building on our latest infrastructure improvements back in 2019, we initiated a series of network changes aimed towards the overall improvement of our service which will also allow us to provide more features in the coming future. We do not expect any negative impact to the service while the changes are completed, and we are also conducting extensive tests and considerations to make sure of it.

As part of these changes, the IP address of some on our POP’s main DNS (Domain Name Server) might change. This change will be visible when you are registering to the main DNS without a number (ex. denver.voip.ms).

If you register by DNS to the server by using a specific number, you will not observe any change in the IP address (ex. denver1.voip.ms, denver2.voip.ms).

For both cases above where you register by DNS, with or without number, you don’t need to make any changes to your DID numbers configuration and incoming calls will continue to route normally.

In the event that you are registering to the main POP DNS without number, by using its IP address instead of its DNS, you may notice that your registration is taking place to our Los Angeles server. This is normal and expected and is related to the series of network changes we are currently doing.

We strongly recommend to always register by DNS, however, if you need to register by IP to the main POP DNS, please do it by using the IP address from our first numbered POP (ex. denver1.voip.ms).

Currently, the following main DNS are working under our new changes:

  • losangeles.voip.ms
  • vancouver.voip.ms
  • seattle.voip.ms
  • sanjose.voip.ms
  • denver.voip.ms

In the unlikely event that you encounter any issue with our service, our technical support team will be available to assist as usual.

We Are Improving Our Canadian Numbers Infrastructure

Just like we did some months ago for United States, we initiated a series of internal network changes aimed towards the overall improvement of the service which will also allow us to provide more features in the coming future.

We do not expect any impact to the service while the changes are completed and we’re also conducting extensive tests and considerations to make sure of it.

Thank you for your continued support as we’re constantly moving towards a better offer for our customers.

New Caller ID Regulations

In line with all the recent rulings in favor of protecting and empowering consumers, VoIP.ms will start enforcing valid Caller IDs as per the NANPA and ITU-T E.164 standards as of January 1st, 2020.  This regulation will apply for all customers including reseller’s clients.

Considering that VoIP.ms already has call filtering solutions, enforcing Caller IDs is simply the cherry on the cake! In fact, we found value in joining all the other phone providers in this massive industry shift in order to ensure that consumers benefit from a minimum level of protection against nuisance calls.

Therefore, calls displaying the following Caller ID information will be blocked by our platform:

  1. International calls with Caller ID containing less than 7 digits and greater than 15 digits;
  2. North America calls with Caller ID not containing exactly 10 digits (exception will be made for 7 digits for 310-xxx numbers);
  3. North America calls with Caller ID containing 10 digits, but with an unassigned NPA (first 3 digits of the number);
  4. North America calls with Caller ID containing 10 digits, but where an unassignable NXX is used (i.e. the second block of 3 digits where the first digit is either zero (0) or one (1)).

Compliance with these standards will ensure proper call termination and reduce potential connection issues, thus resulting in a great call completion rate.

If you are passing your Caller ID from VoIP.ms customer portal, please review your Caller ID number to make sure it complies with these standards. In order to do so, head over to your portal, click “Main Menu”, “Account Settings”, then the “General” tab, edit the “Caller ID number” field and hit save. You can also do this for your Sub Accounts by going to "Sub Accounts" menu, then click on "Manage Sub Accounts".

If you are passing your Caller ID from your own system such as a PBX or a switch, you only need to make sure it follows the guidelines aforementioned.

On top of this, the good news is that we have a few features in our roadmap to allow you to add an extra layer of protection against nuisance calls.

For more information, check out our Wiki article right here or directly contact our support.

New Features - IP & POP Call Security Restrictions

Adding on our latest features about security, all the team at VoIP.ms is excited to announce the release of our latest features: IP Address Restriction and POP Restriction.

These new settings are specifically aimed at protecting all your SIP/IAX accounts and preventing any kind of unauthorized outbound calls by effectively limiting the source of the traffic only to the values you specify, and therefore, rejecting any other source.

IP Address Restriction: This feature is located under “Main Menu”, “Account Settings” then under “Security” tab. When enabled, outgoing calls will be authorized only from the IP address or IP range specified. In other words, this means that when you set an IP restriction to your home IP address, you are effectively telling the server to accept calls from your home and nowhere else.

POP restriction: This feature is also located under “Main Menu”, “Account Settings” then under “Security” tab. When enabled, outgoing calls will be authorized only from the Points of Presence (POPs) selected. This feature works in a similar fashion than IP restriction, but provides more flexibility since the restriction will apply to the server you choose, instead of a specific IP address or a range.

Please note that for both features, you may also easily replicate the restriction to all your sub accounts at once or do it individually by heading over to the sub accounts menu. For more information, you may consult our Wiki article here.

Make sure to check them out and feel free to ask our team for any questions you may have.
